UNIFORM MEME
Everyone is rolling up to battle in uniforms, so here's a place just to lay out what your characters wear now, and what they maybe did in the past! When the team was first formed Xavier gave them all standard issue uniforms, but due to backlash from some people (*cough* At Least Manny And Emma *cough*), they were allowed to pick their own uniforms if they so chose! These days the freedom to wear what you want continues. Also I'd love to encourage everyone to comment on each other's discussions with what your characters think of their teammates' outfits 😌

What were their thoughts on their original standard-issue uniforms? Scott had zero problems with his first uniform, and wore it until he became an adult. He defended it when the others complained. He thought the headsock was cozy, actually. :(
What have all their past uniforms looked like/when did they wear them? In ~2020, he slightly updated his look to blue and yellow because he was turning 18 and got too tall and buff to fit into his old uniform (late growth spurt). While residing in Genosha (2023/2024), he made gradual alterations to this costume (more belts... more pouches...) and ended up with a version of this, but still with the cowl. He didn't free his hair until a month before leaving Genosha (Aug 2024), and was surprised when the media made a big deal about how much better he looked.
What does their current uniform look like?: In early 2025, he started wearing a uniform with more obvious X branding (except i hate the booties and square visor, so pretend he still has the boots and visor from the jim lee costume). He still wears his uniform with the straps/belts/pouches (it's practical!) from time to time, and sometimes throws a bomber jacket over it.
How do they hide their identities, if they do at all?: Public identity, and easy to spot because of his big awkward visor.

Uniforms in General: Regardless of whether the Acolytes wear uniforms, Illyana does not. If they do have uniforms she probably has a few pieces of their logo or colors in her typical wardrobe rotation the way she sometimes wears the X logo and yellow in the comics, though. Despite her general disdain for uniforms, she does think the X-Men's uniforms are cute in the way you might find a gathering of Girl Scouts in their little vests cute.
Typical Outfits: Almost always in all black, favoring her typical lines of asymmetrical long-sleeved crop tops, keyhole cutouts, dramatic necklines, long pants or shorts withs thigh-high socks, and combat boots.
Soulsword and Armor: Illyana's soulsword changes its appearance occasionally, but currently it currently looks like a knight's hand-and-a-half blade with a burnished black metal hilt and a yellow energy blade (ref). When she wields her sword, it also manifests demonic armor on at least her wielding arm, although it covers a variable amount of her body at her own will.

What does their current uniform look like?: Emma has never stuck to a single uniform - if she has to get dressed up, she might as well be having fun with it. Plus, different weather necessitates different amounts of clothing. One thing that's constant? Cleavage. Flaunt what you've got, right? Things she definitely has in rotation are here (but swap any bikini bottoms for booty shorts because wear something at least slightly closer to pants, Emma).
What have all their past uniforms looked like/when did they wear them? When Emma was younger, she was much more prone to wearing short skirts and booty shorts with her uniforms. Much of the tops of her outfits were along the same lines, though, with a bit more corset types in rotation than now. She slowly started to migrate towards (skin tight) pants towards the end of her original tenure, and now generally prefers them.
How do they hide their identities, if they do at all?: Emma refuses to wear a mask because that's bad for your skin - she uses an image inducer to look like a different (but consistent) woman. Once she's outed (which will happen at some point) she'll give up on this because, honestly, who cares anymore.
What were their thoughts on their original standard-issue uniforms? What did theirs look like?: The worst thing she's ever seen. She immediately told Xavier that it was unacceptable for a host of reasons. Put it on once, gagged, and threw it in the back of a closet. Emma couldn't get over that it was both skin tight and frumpy at the same time. It pretty much just looked like Jean's OG one.

What does their current uniform look like?: The classic skin tight black with a red V. Kurt thinks it's flattering, but more importantly, he can move easily in it. The pads of his fingers and toes are made with special comic science material so that he can still stick to walls using Van Der Waals forces. (i.e. his gecko fingers/toes)
What have all their past uniforms looked like/when did they wear them? ~2018, he moved to the V design, but it was blue and gold instead of black and red. This remained his standard color scheme until 2022. After returning from Hell, he changed to a red and black design.
How do they hide their identities, if they do at all?: Kurt's in a position where hiding his identity is simply not worth the effort. Right now, Kurt Wagner is publicly known as Nightcrawler, and holds some celebrity status even out of uniform. When the team first started, he instead used an image inducer to hide his real self, using it to go into town and socialize like a normal kid. However, as he grew older, he became frustrated with the whole charade. He started refusing to use the image inducer, even if it jeopardized the anonymity of the X-Men. (Teenage rebellion, fights with Xavier, etc.)
What were their thoughts on their original standard-issue uniforms? What did theirs look like?: It was... not the most flattering on him. Complaints: The cowl flattened his curls. The yellow undies thing needed several adjustments to account for his tail. It made his eyes look even creepier than normal. Kurt appreciates that it was designed with some attempt to keep their identities safe, it's just that no one was about to mistake Kurt for anything but Kurt.

my costume evolution narrative is that scott DID NOT see any reason to make serious changes to the standard-issue look until he was living on genosha and got bullied for looking like a nerd and/or this was his first time on his own since joining the x-men. would still be wearing the yellow undies except charles went into a coma and he's coping by wearing black instead of blue and slapping a big X on his chest
