Concept: Aware she is one (atypical) iteration of untold thousands, this Jean Grey's telepathic capabilities have been permanently altered or erased for reasons not understood by her or Xavier, although she has gained multiversal awareness in exchange.

Brief History: Jean's mutant powers manifested at the worst possible time: during mounting anti-mutant sentiment, when she was going through puberty and had just lost her best friend. She was shunted around various psychs and subjected to a battery of experiments to prove her extrasensory perception was real before her parents eventually entrusted her to the care of Charles Xavier when she was fourteen. The youngest member of the original X-Men team, she took to the work they did immediately and helping mutants around the world became her wholehearted passion.

When she was seventeen, she stepped away from the X-Men to attend Bard College, where her parents worked as professors. At the time she left for college, she did not intend to return to the team in earnest as she wanted to go to law school and become a politician, although she left on good terms and sometimes returned to help in crises. During X-Tinction Agenda, Jean went missing from her college town shortly before the Xavier's staff and students disappeared. After the events at Genosha, Jean's faith in her vision for her own life has been shaken, and she's ended up back at the Academy as a teacher and an active member of the X-Men again.

You Know Her As: The annoying little sister-type of the OG team who had intended to step away for good but recently joined back up. Unerringly loyal and kind as a friend, but chronically unable to leave well enough alone. Up in everyone's business, always. Xavier's brand-new Civics/Econ teacher. A never-satisfied overachiever with a dozen esoteric hobbies and skills. A notorious political activist for mutant rights who intends to be elected to the US Senate by age 30. Moderately more neurotic than a stock Jean Grey, but good at hiding it.

Etc: Mutual arch-nemeses with Senator Kelly. Very embarrassing to keep beefing with a teenage girl who only ever saves your life, Kelly. She regularly goes viral for dragging his ass on social media.

2015: Jean’s powers manifest after she witnesses her best friend Annie die in a hit-and-run car accident. At first, her parents and doctors assume her self-reported powers of ESP are traumatic delusions, but they are quickly demonstrated to be real when she also develops telekinetic abilities.

2016: Jean is sent to the care of Xavier, and soon after enrolls at the academy and joins the team at age 14 as Marvel Girl.

2018: Wildways: Jean’s incredibly divisive personality makes her the subject of much audience debate and she ends up having an outsized amount of screentime despite not doing much competition-wise. I like to think she got teamed up with a Deadpool at some point and found him profoundly annoying but their Statler and Waldorfing was a big hit with the audience.

2019: Days of Future Past: When asked to confirm Kitty’s claims Jean’s response was functionally “Yeah, this happens a lot.”

This was the first time Jean met Senator Kelly IRL and also the beginning of their public ongoing beef. She is, however, ideologically opposed to assassination, so she helped save his life anyway. A thank you would be nice!

Jean was pro-going public and threw a little hissyfit about it when she was outvoted.

2020: God Loves Man Kills: Jean’s pro-mutant political aspirations and the chip on her shoulder about being a less powerful mutant than a prototypical Jean Grey make her a little more susceptible to Erik Lehnsherr’s radical ideologies than she would otherwise be, and during this time she becomes particularly close with him.

When Erik declines Xavier’s invitation to join the X-Men, he extends Jean an invitation to instead join his Brotherhood of Mutants, which she declines.

Jean also left both the Academy and the X-Men in the fall of 2020 to attend Bard college. She makes the personal decision to do this publicly as a mutant, and also starts vlogging about her “normal life” as a mutant college student to a moderately large audience, although she does not disclose her previous affiliation with the X-Men.

2021: Jean’s social media following blows up in a huge way after the X-Men go public and she links her private identity with that of Marvel Girl’s. Huge day for the internet conspiracy theorists who had already figured this out.

2022: Jean intermittently returns to the team for a handful of missions as, functionally, publicity for her extensive Anti-MRA Campaign. During the last of these missions (coincidentally, right after Scott starts dating Madelyne) she informs the team members that she does not intend to return to the Institute or team on a permanent basis after she graduates, as she plans to attend law school and then run for office.

2023: X-Tinction Agenda: Jean disappears from the Bard campus over winter break and her family contacts Xavier after they fail to locate her on their own, around the time the students and staff go missing from the Institute. She is a favored puppet of the Magistrates, who use her as a mouthpiece basically any time they’re forced to talk to outsiders, including the X-Men. They make her behave as if she’s voluntarily joined them, although it is quickly apparent to anyone who knows her that this isn’t the case. She’s forced into combat with Scott before ultimately being rescued.

Jean has not spoken to anyone except Xavier about these experiences, but anyone who knows her can tell she was deeply rattled by the experience, so much so that she returns to the Institute to convalesce and ultimately finishes her senior year at Bard remotely.

Erik again extends her an open invitation to join him on Genosha, an offer which she initially refuses because she’s avoiding Scott but is still considering as she re-evaluates her goals for the future.

2024: At the beginning of the 2024 school year, Jean accepts a teaching position at the Institute as their civics/econ teacher.
