UPDATE:
late 2021 While fighting [INSERT VILLAIN HERE], Kurt's powers were undermined and while teleporting he got stuck in the Brimstone Dimension (basically hell). To his teammates, he just vanished mid-fight doing his normal teleporting.
Jean and/or Xavier were probably able to track down that he was at least alive, but it took 6+ months to get him back. In the meantime, Scott is the team leader.
2022 Kurt is found and brought back home. When Kurt left, the MRA was only a proposition. When he's finally saved, there's registration and sentinels and everything is awful. He's in a bad mental place and lashes out in interviews, quoting Magneto and causing a scandal.

Emma is technically off being a boss babe during this BUT she would have at least come back for a little bit to help investigate/try to get him back, because Kurt!!! Even when she's off running around she's keeping in contact with everyone and will probably have an uptick in that during this whole mess :c
Once Kurt's back if he needs a little vacation he can go hang out with her on a resort somewhere.

Scott was extremely stressed out and worried about Kurt, which means he just shut down his emotions and put all of his focus into work. He never gave up on finding Kurt, but was incredibly useless when it came to dimensional travel so :((( But if you show him the way into Hell, he'll run right in to find their leader.
As a leader, Scott is the polar opposite of Kurt, being strict, demanding and not at all touchy-feely. No chatter on comms! Codenames only on missions! Get ready to RUN DRILLS!! When it comes down to it, Scott is good at leading the team, but he was under A LOT of pressure from Xavier, what with so many absent members and the X-Men now being high-profile figures. He's stuck trying to be the diplomatic voice of reason during the chaos with the MRA and the Sentinels, which 💀

Manny had already left the institute by the time Kurt disappeared but was definitely upset and shaken when he learned about what happened. He returned home to the institute to check in with everyone, but probably just the once unless he was called back. There wasn't anything he could do (unless people wanted to shut off their bad feelings for a while), being there was difficult, and he wasn't keen to be associated with Xavier's with all the MRA shit starting up. So. He kept physical distance but stayed in contact. I think he probably went to the location where it happened if it was accessible to him, just to see if he could glean anything, but obviously could not.
When Kurt was finally home again, I think he maybe started driving up on the weekends so they could go to Mass/post-Mass breakfast together like they used to. Not because he's worried about Kurt or anything. He just prefers this church, obviously. Catholic Friend Hangout Time is just a bonus~

I think the location Kurt vanished from was upsettingly mundane. Which is extra terrible because there were no good leads.
But once Kurt came back he was a little more mellow for a while and appreciated Manny being there. Company was important to him. He was a lot less inclined to argue with Manny for a few months. But don't worry, he's recovered and being annoying to Manny again these days. :) (With residual appreciation that Manny was there for him in his own way.)
I had been kinda avoiding giving Kitty anything close to dimension hopping powers even though I keep reading it’s probably technically possible so now my brain is goin like. What if she in just this one case because her friend was missing was able to step between the atoms of dimensions and help the team get him 😔 Anyway I feel like if that happened it exhausted her for like days and hasn’t been replicated since but the more important part was she was obviously extremely worried through all of this but for once, toed the line and was a good team member who followed orders for Scoot’s sake. She did not respect Kurt’s door for a little while in the name of being supportive

I love this :( Kurt honestly was quite clingy with the team when he got back. Quiet is nice, but being alone is not. So Kitty can bother him, and he will feel.... bad??? Kitty risked a lot to find him. If she wants to sit with him and ramble he likes the noise.
Kitty listening to Scott... is she being mind controlled by an evil AI...
also feel like at this time they were running with a bunch of new, less experienced X-Men so they were like 20/21 and fully the responsible adults lmao
